CALA Announces 2011 Excellence in Service Award Winners
AgeSong at Lakeside Park’s Dinah Bailes to Receive Award
for Outstanding Executive Director

Oakland, CA (May 23, 2011): The California Assisted Living Association (CALA) announced today that Dinah Bailes at AgeSong of Lakeside Park, will receive the organization’s prestigious Outstanding Executive Director award at their Spring Conference in Santa Clara. CALA chooses recipients of these awards based on their commitment to providing outstanding, quality care and service to residents in the Assisted Living communities where they work.

Bailes is an exceptional executive director. She has been in the field for over 20 years and, despite all of her experience, she is always looking for new and better ways to improve care, service, staff benefits and business models. Bailes uses her personal experience of caring for her mother who was diagnosed with dementia and over time needed assisted living, skilled nursing and hospice care, to help staff, families and community members understand the deep and complex emotions that come with caring for people with dementia. Her passion for education has fueled the internship program at Lakeside Park to include over 18 master and doctorate level students, and the ancestry program to include more than 20 students from local high schools. According to Paula Hertel, President of Development and COO at AgeSong Communities, “One of Dinah’s greatest strengths as a leader is that she builds teams that grow in confidence and skill because of her leadership and mentorship. Despite all of her many accomplishments and successes, she is one of the most humble people I have ever worked with. It is truly an honor to have Dinah as a part of our AgeSong team.”

Currently, nearly 170,000 Californians are residents in Assisted Living communities and the need for Assisted Living continues to grow. Assisted Living provides residents with the care they need to perform the activities of daily living, medication management, social activities, housekeeping, meals, transportation, and may offer dementia care programs and health-related services. According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the following is the percentage of seniors by age cohort who need assistance with three or more activities of daily living:
• Age 75 to 79: 20%
• Age 80 to 84: 31%
• Age 85+: 50%

A recent study commissioned by CALA showed that Assisted Living is a major contributor to local economies. Assisted Living provides more than 68,000 jobs in the state.
